Case Studies

American Idol 2007 Competition

American Idol is one of the most popular shows in the USA and is broadcast exclusively in SA on the M-Net Series channel. The requirement was to create an interactive competition around the show with the prize being a trip for 2 to Los Angeles for the American Idol final. The aims were to encourage viewer loyalty and increase audience ratings. The target was for 15,000 viewers to participate in the campaign.

Within a very tight deadline, Opera Interactive designed and implemented an interactive service, including a unique “refer a friend” functionality and web-based leader board. Audience participation remained high till the end and over 30,000 people interacted with the service, generating over 400,000 messages. Around 30% of participants were referred by regular viewers, indicating increased audience ratings as well.

Cadbury’s Campaign

Opera’s platform technology was used to create an interactive mobile service offering free content (branded wallpapers/ringtones), special offers and trivia. The campaign was promoted on pack, with cross promotion on radio and TV. This was one of the biggest mobile campaigns in SA in 2006 with 442,300 unique users and over 2 million interactions. Opera also provided customer service to Cadbury consumers from its call centre in Johannesburg, advising on competition rules, content downloads and handset issues.

Mother"s Day Campaign

Lotus FM, the leading SABC owned radio station serving the Indian community, was seeking creative ideas for a Mother’s Day campaign. Opera devised and implemented an inbound MMS campaign, where listeners could submit photos of their Moms via MMS. These were then posted to the Lotus FM website and an SMS vote was run to find Lotus FM’s favourite Mom The service was promoted on air and helped drive traffic to the newly launched Lotus FM website.

African Bank Interactive TV Commercial

Red Cherry TV introduced a mobile element to a classic African Bank TV ad. The ad offered viewers a chance to win R20,000. The reply message to each entry asked consumers if they wanted to be contacted by an African Bank representative regarding a bank loan. In total the campaign attracted 10,734 unique users who interacted 23,674 times with the service. The objective of the campaign was to convert 1% of the respondents - in fact the conversion rate was over 4% and generated over 400 new customers.

Xmas MMS campaign

Following a successful launch in 2006 Virgin Mobile wanted to send out Seasons Greetings to its growing subscriber base in South Africa. As the WASP partner to Virgin Mobile, Opera designed, created and distributed an MMS using our robust, high-volume MMS binds. Opera Interactive specialises in MMS marketing and bulk MMS distribution.
